Cataract Treatment

At Urban Optics, we are a College Station optometrist who believes the more you understand about your vision the better you will care for it. One of the more common vision problems, especially as we age, is cataracts. In fact, according to the National Eye Institute (NEI), about half of all Americans will either have or had, cataracts in their lives. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye that negatively affects vision. Cataracts can occur in either eye or even both eyes. They do not, however, spread from one to another.

What is the Cause of Cataracts?

The lens of the eye is primarily made up of protein and water, so a lack of either or both can be a likely cause. Research has indicated that diabetes can be the cause of cataracts. Other causes include alcohol use and extended exposure to ultraviolet sunlight. That can be an issue here in College Station.

The Symptoms of Cataracts

There are a variety of symptoms that may indicate the presence of cataracts. They can include:

  • Poor vision at night

  • Faded colors

  • Lights may appear overly bright

  • Blurred vision

  • Double vision

  • Increasing changes in corrective vision prescriptions

These symptoms may be indicative of other vision problems as well. If you are experiencing these or other vision issues, we encourage you to contact the optometrist in College Station with a full range of vision services. We invite you to call Urban Optics.

The Four Types of Cataracts

There are four types of cataracts.

  • Congenital cataracts. While some babies are born with cataracts, others develop them in childhood. They may not affect vision until later in life.

  • Congenital cataracts. These are cataracts that form after an injury to the eye.

  • Secondary cataracts. Cataracts can form as the result of unrelated eye surgery, like glaucoma. They can also be triggered by diabetes.

  • Radiations cataracts. These are cataracts that develop after exposure to some form of radiation.

The good news is that cataract treatments are relatively simple and can be done on an outpatient basis.

Cataract Treatment

If vision is not too negatively affected by cataracts, vision may be improved through corrective lenses. If not, cataracts can be removed by a micro-surgical procedure. This is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States. At Urban Optics, we provide a range of tests that can determine the severity of cataracts and discuss the best option for you.
