How Polarized Glasses Work
Polarized glasses have specially designed lenses that filter out reflected light rays. While this creates a slightly darker image, it allows the eye to better focus on the minute details within your field of vision making objects appear clearer and crisper.
Benefits of Polarized Glasses
The vast majority of people find their daytime vision greatly improved by wearing polarized glasses. There are, however, a few situations where polarized glasses are more of a hindrance than a help. These are generally instancing where the slight darkening of images that polarized lenses provide would be counterproductive and include viewing LCD screens, downhill skiing, flying an airplane, and driving at night.
Generally, the glare blocking effect of polarized lenses offers three major benefits.
#1 Improved Safety
By blocking out reflected light, polarized glasses remove the effects of glare on vision. This glare can become a serious safety issue by obscuring obstacles in your path from your sight. For example, glare on the road while driving can cause drivers to miss turns and objects in the roadway.
#2 Reduced Eye Strain
Glare also causes eye strain. This is due in large part to the need to squint to see images clearly in the presence of glare. Squinting puts stress on the delicate structures of the eye and can cause headaches, eye fatigue, irritation, and redness. This is an exacerbated issue for those with light-sensitive eyes and migraine or other headache disorders. Polarized glasses eliminate this issue, allowing the eyes to feel well rested and more comfortable.
#3 Sharper Vision
Objects are seen as never before with polarized lenses. Details are sharper, colors more vibrant, and the contrast between light and dark is clearer with these specially treated lenses that remove the impediment of refracted light.
